I saw an absolutely humongous woodpecker today. Apparently it's a Pileated Woodpecker, and the girls call him Woody (appropriately enough). I wish you could see how huge this thing is. Wow.
I saw and heard one this morning, where I live, in far Northern Maine. So impressive. And then it flew over the top of our house, and could watch it from the balcony outside. You cannot miss it. The sound so different from the Hairy and the Downy, both of which I have all the time on my property.
I've got this guy pecking at my evergreen right now. He is HUGE! I'm in Titusville, NJ. His call is like a screechy loud version of the morning dove gurgle. He doesn't seem to mind me standing there below him taking out my recycling. I guess he's tamed!
